Style Heroine - Jennifer Herrema Part I & II

By Miista Blogs
Miista has been graced with two of the most amazing interns this summer. You'll be seeing Anthony's out of this world graphic design work soon, but consider this your lucky day because we've got a STYLE HEROINE write up from our resident heavy metal head Christopher for your immediate viewing pleasure! Jennifer Herrema gets his motor running...and here's a few reasons why. Jennifer Herrema is best known for fronting the influential rock band Royal Trux. She’s has also been heavily involved in record producing, modeling, journalism, and is recognized for her artwork. At the age of 15, she started recording with Neil Hagerty and thus Royal Trux was brought to life. Virgin Records signed the band in 1995 after seeing Geffen Records commercial success with Nirvana in the early 90’s. After Royal Trux released its most famous record, Thank You media attention naturally followed the band, allowing Jennifer to parlay her fame into a bit of journalism work. Through this she was able to interview one of her all time biggest inspirations: Keith Richards (note the similar swagger.) And it didn't hurt that she got some face time with John Lee Hooker as well. As her star continued to rise she found more diverse opportunities. There was a Calvin Klein campaign by Steven Meisel, the vocals on that MGMT single, the tees for Hysteric Glamour, the denim line for Volcom, and after the death of her group Royal Trux, she linked up with bands such as The Kills, Edith Frost and The Make-Up to help produce their records. Finding herself to be a natural, Jennifer and past partner Neil were active in starting the independent record label Drag City and Domino Records. She eventually formed a new band called RTX or Rad Times Express in 2003 and now three albums later the band is called Black Bananas and the LP, released in January of this year, is Rad Times Express IV. The girl is seriously well rounded -- because on top of all of her involvement in the modeling and music industries she's working an art angle too. Her art exhibitions include- “Violence is Way” at the Peter Kilchmann Gallery in Zurich, while “Red White and Blue” at the Spencer Brownstone Gallery in NYC and “KITTY EX” which was showcased through out Japan sponsored by Sanrio. [caption id="attachment_9806" align="aligncenter" width="1280" caption="ROYAL TRUX"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_9807" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="BLACK BANANAS ALBUM COVER BY ANDRES JENNE"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_9811" align="aligncenter" width="398" caption="ROYAL TRUX"][/caption] In a way this will sound so cliche, but I don’t really care… it’s the honest truth, Jennifer does things in such a natural way while morphing into the present. She’s looked the same for the past 20 years. She’s real, doesn’t look back and stays on her own path. Jennifer is a total tom-boy, you can see it reflected through her style-jeans, tees, and boots. She’s like the girl version of Keith Richards or Gram Parsons but even cooler in my opinion. Jennifer a lot of the time is either working or on tour, in her clothes you can see how she mixes details. Her style is diary of her life, and from being on the road. Eternal hails to Jennifer’s music! [caption id="attachment_9815" align="aligncenter" width="620" caption="TEES FOR HYSTERIC GLAMOUR"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_9818" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="JENNIFER HERREMA FOR VOLCOM"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_9820" align="aligncenter" width="741" caption="THE KINGS OF FUCKED UP SHIT"][/caption] The best style muses have looks that can be represented by a simple cartoon. If your style can be boiled down to a caricature then you know you're doing something right. Herrema does. it. right. After a call for more information, our intern Christopher delved a bit deeper and came back with a Part II on his Jennifer Herrema feature. Enjoy. ‘I guess I like the idea that she doesn’t feel that she has to look like a piece of meat to be noticed, she looks tough, and it doesn’t look like a façade, it looks like she can take care of business. I like the way she holds herself in her clothes; they are not really clothes just an extension of her bodies motion. There are all these moaning ‘I hate-myself ‘ type of females, that girls get obsessed by and look up to. Why be infatuated by misery? It’s a waste, when you can do something productive, just ride the wave and have rad times!’-Joanna Marie Beaumont, London 2012 [caption id="attachment_10080" align="aligncenter" width="367" caption="Joanna Beaumont"][/caption] A quote from a die-hard fan, (my girlfriend Joanna) on Jennifer Herrema, who has been a fan of her since purchasing Sweet Sixteen, after reading in Mojo magazine about the album in the Top worst albums of all times write up. As I sit here listening to The Rolling Stone’s Wild Horses by The Flying Burrito Brothers, I guess it’s the same for me as it’s the same for Jennifer. Music is always first, and foremost. Hence the tunes I got on while I write this. For all of Jennifer’s loyal fans, they know that music defines everything she does. What I find so incredible about this women and her entirety, is that there so much meaning behind it all. She’s built her vision from the ground up, and shows you how to have a good time, and be free. Far away from the Virgin Record days, with her music now, she’s has the availability to record and put something out whenever she wants. Like anyone Jennifer’s had her ups and downs, but over the years you can tell she’s had cool experiences on tour and have met a lot of interesting people. She’s real life. MUSIC Her music paints a collage of things. Just have a think, and read the last lines in 10 Days 12 Nights lyrics to yourself. “Your old girlfriend told me That you once painted t-shirts For a teenage rock n roll band While I ate nothing but the frosting That grits on the teeth Until I rolled back out from the dunes” [caption id="attachment_10090" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Sweet Sixteen album cover"][/caption] When I think of those lyrics, its represents a scene in my head where my cousin use to live. Its place called Pismo Beach, where there were these incredible sand dunes on the coast up near Northern California. He told me countless wild stories, where he use to sit with a portable stereo listening to Black Sabbath’s, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath hanging out with chicks and getting stoned on the sand dunes all night. I use go there a lot to see him when I was younger, we had some killer times. I think even with Jennifer’s new stuff in particular the track called Do It by Black Bananas. That shit cuts you like a knife. Its got these ripping solo’s with this acid funkadelic sound. For me being into Heavy Metal, usually fuckers in the scene only stick to listening to Metal, which is pretty lame to be just into one thing. I am a Latino kid, who grew up in Southern Califas (Spanish slang), so I love Old School Funk. You can definitely hear those influences in Jennifer’s music. That shit’s so dope. I was reading interview Jennifer did, with this guy by the name of Neil Macdonald for Sidewalk Magazine. She goes onto say, growing up in DC she was exposed to Funk listening to Zapp and doing the double dutch in the streets. Going back to Black Banana’s track, Do It, the sound almost reminds me of a heavy speed fueled version of Angela Winbush & Rene’s I’ll Be Good in a way. Black Bananas are like funkdafied version of RTX. LP’s & Promo Even with the early Royal Trux stuff, have a look at some of the records… even down to the artwork, and the promo stuff they do…There are so many layers to it all. Get involved. [caption id="attachment_10081" align="alignleft" width="1024" caption="Royal Trux promo gear"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_10082" align="alignleft" width="1024" caption="Royal Trux"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_10083" align="alignleft" width="1024" caption="Singles, Live, Unreleased"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_10084" align="aligncenter" width="432" caption="Royal Trux "][/caption] Steez Take a look around and I guess people are doing what they see, most of this whole rock n roll clothing trend is an attempt to looking the lifestyle without having to lift a finger. It’s usually easy to see through people; anyway who fucking cares, like a nightmare Jennifer James Herrema will take away their breath. Flicking through photos of Jennifer, and comparing what she wore back in the early days to now, she still looks the same but you can totally tell her style has evolved naturally over the years. Since she was a kid it’s no secret that one of her favorite garms is denim. Jeans have been a consistent key piece in her life. She’s wears them until they’ve fallen apart. The constant arts and crafts side to patching them up comes out of necessity. The denim scraps that are sewn on connect with that specific time and moment, they tell a story. They represent her. I’m a firm believer clothes will always look prime-time if you feel good. Really it is not so much how clothes are made but how they are worn. Its’ so cool that Jennifer was exposed to different styles of music early on in her life. Having been exposed to different types of music when you’re young; it really opens your eyes to a lot of things. I have to thank my Dad for doing that for me, but I call him Papa. You can see the heavy metal influences as well, in the way Jennifer dresses. Ha! She’s a Devil’s Child. I saw her Judas Priest Screaming For Vengeance patch. ”Oh no got your claws stuck in me. You never let me go. I believe you're the devil. I believe you're the devil's child.” Fucking love that album. [caption id="attachment_10085" align="aligncenter" width="640" caption="Judas Priest patch"][/caption] With Jennifer growing up on the East Coast, it gets very cold during the winters, as well as when she lived in the mountains of Virginia, she would collect fur coats. You can see through the years she really connects with her fur coats, and I would assume it gets pretty damn chilly backstage too. Just look at this photo of the ancient heavy metal god DIO. [caption id="attachment_10086" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Jennifer in a fur coat"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_10087" align="aligncenter" width="585" caption="Dio in a fur coat"][/caption] Just check out this fire photo of Jennifer in a Motorhead shirt. This girl has definitely got some class. [caption id="attachment_10088" align="aligncenter" width="638" caption="Jennifer in a Motorhead shirt"][/caption] Motorhead the true kings of speed and louder than everything else. Everyone should go buy their records. I hope it changes your life as it did for me. I have a lot of favorite photos of Motorhead, but this one is literally probably one of the greatest shots I’ve ever seen. [caption id="attachment_10089" align="aligncenter" width="800" caption="Motorhead press shot"][/caption] One last thing I want to stress about Jennifer is, you can clearly see her clothes are in no way shape or form just for the stage and for photographs. She wears these things anywhere she goes. Her style isn't agro in anyway, she knows how to have a good time, and share laughs. Some people take themselves so seriously. What total nerds. You would never catch her in lingerie or being over exposed, and she never will give a false impression.... Again eternal hails to you Jennifer, and thanks for the rad times.
