Syle Heroine: Amy Winehouse
Hearts were broken worldwide when the news of Amy Winehouse's death hit just 2 years ago. She revitalized the music industry with her brooding, deep contralto vocals which she presented in an eclectic mix of R&B, soul and jazz. Professionally she was a star -- winning five Grammys in one night kind of star -- but personally, she was a beautiful mess, and it was reflected in her style. Amy Winehouse loved the girl groups of the 1960s more than anything and she incorporated their stylings into her everyday. Her signature beehive and Cleopatra-style eye makeup made her instantly recognizable. The inspiration for the eye liner came from the group The Ronettes -- Ronnie Spector once saw her photo in the Village Voice
and for a moment actually thought that it was her own image. Amy had successfully transformed herself into a swinging '60s style icon complete with pin-up tattoos and bright red lips. There was a tinge of darkness to her image though; the dirty ballet slippers that she wore daily, blackened fingers from crack pipes and freebase, the frailty and the sad state of her skin, often plagued by acne and various rashes while bruises marked up her legs. Amy's story is one of the saddest there is and it adds some creepy slice of truth to the whole 27 club (Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and now Amy Winehouse all dead at 27 years old.) Her image is unforgettable though and she will live on forever through her incredible music.
