Stockings are her canvas
The word ‘stocking’ makes it sound like a garment of the past, where a stocking could either be black, sheer, sexy and held up with a suspender belt or, in contrast, practical, brown and slightly wrinkled around the ankle. Stockings and by extension socks are the worker bees of our wardrobes, rarely are they the stars of the show. According to the popular first-stop shop for knowledge Wikipedia, a stocking is specifically “a close-fitting, variously elastic garment covering the foot and lower part of the leg.” Interestingly, whilst ‘stock‘ refers to the bottom "stump" part of the body and was used in the 15th century in the context of upper-stocks, basically tights and nether-stocks, later known as stockings, ‘socks’ derives from something more akin to a shoe, 'soccus' a loose-fitting slipper worn by Roman comic actors. Miuccia Prada has been credited by some with the elevation of the stocking-sock/luxe- sock to its rightful place on the catwalk. We’ve got socks with heels, socks with sandals (no longer the domain of the lone geography teacher). Then there’s the likes of style maven Chloe Sevigny who has for years created a touch of edginess, by adding the much maligned white sock to many of perfectly curated outfits. Strathcona stockings designer Ryley O’Byrne
seems to take inspiration from the past too. Her hand-printed stockings feature a giddy array of birds and botanicals that could have come from the pages of Victorian science journals. She even asked her grandmother to look book model for her. “I think my favorite thing about socks is how egalitarian they are,” says O’Byrne, “Everyone can wear, appreciate and afford them. They don’t leave anyone out.” Strathcona Stockings are available now on Miista.com
