Shelby's Instagram username does not lie. We're pretty convinced she is indeed terminally chill. We spotted her in a pair of Virginias during our daily rounds of Instagram stalking. As we do. At the age of 22 most of us aren't very grounded - yours truly was a total airhead - but Shelby is. She is young but looks to have all the makings of a future power woman. Below is the lil conversation we had! Don't forget to follow her on Instagram
. So you live in LA. If we were to spend a day with you, where would you take us?
I've been living in LA for little over a year now, I was living in Hawaii previously. So I'm always looking and keeping an ear out on what to do in LA. To start off a day in LA, I would first take us to Aroma Cafe (for amazing bunch and coffee). Then leading us to thrift shopping in Silver Lake and Echo Park. Of course after finding new treasures, we would of course have to take some photos. Taking us to our next location in Downtown LA, to shoot some urban styled city photos. Lastly, after all that shopping and photo taking we would have to relax with some great beer. Golden Road Brewery is one of my favorite locals brewers in the city, with so many beers on tap! I mean, who doesn't love a good IPA or Hefenweizen after shopping? How old are you?
I just turned 22 last week (My new Miista boots were a present to myself). What do you do? And more importantly, what are you about (if its not the same thing)?
I'm currently in my last year of film school. I'm getting my BFA degree in cinematography. While going to school, I also do lots of freelance work for films and music videos. Mostly working in the camera department on set and doing wardrobe for actors. If I'm not doing all that, I freelance as a photographer around LA (mostly fashion shoots or headshots for actors). Though I am studying cinematography at a film school and also doing wardrobe for films, I'm not completely interested in making movies.. I actually want to work in fashion as a cinematographer/photographer working with brands that inspire me. Everything I'm learning with cameras in school I just apply it to fashion and everything I pick up from doing wardrobe contributes way I perceive the way clothes look behind the camera. I'm so inspired by movement. May that be the movement of a model, the way fabrics move or the way textures from clothing or shoes look on camera. Do you have any people, bloggers, IG users or magazines that inspire you? In terms of fashion and the things that you do?
I think one of my biggest inspirations is Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, fashion wise. I love their minimalist and chic looks from their brands. My ultimate inspiration is Stanley Kubrick. Though I would love to work in fashion someday, Kubrick's films have always made me eager to incorporate aspects of making movies and filming fashion. I mean, c'mon, the textures and movement in his films are undeniably beautiful. Which designers or fashion companies do you like and why (don’t worry – you don’t have to say Miista)?
Vivienne Westwood is one of my favorite designers, mostly because of her risk taking and out there designs. One of my favorite quotes from her is, "The only reason I'm in fashion is to destroy the word conformity. Nothing's interesting to me unless it's got that element". Living in LA, I see too many people doing what everyone else is doing, I'm always pushing for more people to take risks with what they are wearing. Stella McCartney is another designer I love (of course I can't afford either of these, YET). Her designs can be wore by everyday women (not just for red carpet or runway) and have a more masculine tailoring about them that I die for! There is something empowering about watching her runway shows every season and it must be the masculinity of her designs on beautiful women. And lastly, Miista has always been a favorite of mine shoe wise. Last year I was filming a store interview for an online fashion magazine, LiveLoveShopLA, at Wild Style on Melrose in LA. That was the first time I was able to see in person the superb quality and funkiness the brand had with each shoe in the store. Right then and there I KNEW I had to buy some. I eventually bought my first pair of Miista sandals and now I'm on my second pair of shoes. Both shoes are comfortable and durable for being a more fashion shoe (I definitely need durability with running around LA with a camera in hand and not wanting to sacrifice style). Miista is definitely my favorite shoe designers in the market today and I am always an advocate for my friends purchasing from the brand. You dabble with photography professionally. What’s your setup like? And what’s your view on IG - good or bad?
My setup is comprised of my Canon 7D, various different lenses, top of the line tripod, lighting accessories and l also have my own lighting setup. Besides digital, I also have a few different film cameras that I use for personal use or professional if the client is interested in a film look. Personally, Instagram has been something majorly positive for my art. I have built a little base of fellow artist and models who follow my work, which has lead me to many jobs around LA. When done in good taste, I feel like Instagram can be a powerful tool for any artist. Social media is the new wave for people to advertise, look at Nasty Gal.. Their use of social media t is the one of the reasons they are so successful. What did you dream of becoming as a kid?
My dream as a kid was to become a journalist. Throughout high school and my first year of college I was set on that being my career. Until one day I decided that I liked the whole camera thing.. I called up my parents one day when I was living in Hawaii, told them I was moving to LA to go after cinematography/photography and I haven't looked back since. Anything else you’d like to add?
I'd like to add that no matter your size or where you're from, you can still express yourself through fashion.. Don't be shy! By no means am I a tall, thin model type.. I'm actually just tall and curvy. So I urge women of all types to rock what you have and wear what speaks to you! So throw on those funky Miista heels, an amazing ensemble and rock your day!
