Casual Sexism & Questionable Humour
Ah, gender roles… they exist, no matter how much we speak of equality. Sometimes they’re fine, often times they’re not. When they're reversed, they can range from mortifying to hilarious and that’s kinda what we’ve been keeping ourselves busy with today. The Guardian posted a video
of Leah Green going undercover, acting out scenes women experience daily. Of course the roles were reversed and it was her doing the cat calling. We got a good laugh out of it because can you really imagine a woman doing any of those things? The confusion and utter disbelief on the men's faces as she walks up to them and asks them to go home with her speaks for itself. Having pretty plump lips and a perpetual trout pout I'm well aware why every other Tinder message I get refers to the sender's penis. It doesn't make it ok and it's definitely not flattering. Look, thinking of sex isn't a unique quality only men have. It crosses all our minds! But, unless they're somewhere on the autistic spectrum, a person should be able to filter said thoughts. Green's video is as effective because her gender underlines how painfully inappropriate her actions are. We'll let you in on a secret - it doesn't matter who does it. It will always be super awkward and uncomfortable. Though neither sexism nor gender inequality are particularly funny, we embrace a good laugh. Leah Green gave us a good one but below is also a short film that plays with the same idea. If you have 11 minutes, give it a watch! Thoughtful and witty* - is there a better way to start the weekend? OK, so probably, but it's really good and very much worth your time. *Edit: We've changed the word 'funny' to 'witty'. To clarify, we don't find the subject funny in the least. It's just the idea of how downright ridiculous the behaviour is when the roles are reversed - it highlights how inappropriate it is. Of course it's not acceptable either way - neither women nor men should ever be subjected to sexual harassment or assault. Just by switching the roles, it becomes more obvious because we're less used to it.
Another video is from Buzzfeed. It's not all that great - we'd skip to 51 seconds in as that's were it gets ridiculous. Even the original burger eating beach babe seems like a parody but the male remake really takes the prize.
And then there's this! We're guessing/hoping it pokes fun at the sexy female model cliche rather than trying to capture the attention of the ladies.
Last but not least, the Australian comedians best known for their 'Life Organic'
song! Much like James Franco's and Seth Rogan's spoof of Kim and Kanye's wedding photos, Bondi hipsters Dom is posing a la Miranda Kerr. Honestly? They're both hot. Just weird how one image would be considered super sexy and the other ridiculous.
Pictures of Miranda Kerr are by Mario Testino, the lush looks of Bondi Hipster Dom Nader by Pat Stevenson
. Just like this we are over and out - have a fun weekend, all you beautiful people!
