SLK: Six Things
Pronounced like silk, SLK has an apt name. Singing the softest slightly dark pop music, her voice is silky smooth. It's not easy sounding fresh when making alt R&B but SLK does. It's no wonder everyone from a casual music lover to Vice magazine are raving about her. Some compare her to Jessie Ware and Sampha but SLK is great in her own right. A bit twisted perhaps, her music is the kind you listen when you want an experience of a kind. It's not background noise. It'll make you close your eyes and take deep breaths. It kinda like meditation. What more do you want, right? Ahead of her debut EP coming out in the end of May, we asked her to spill some facts about her. Road trip soundtrack: My big sis got me into Massive Attack as soon as I could walk and 'Blue Lines' is something that's always with me. Dream collab: There are about a hundred, seriously! Bjork would come close to top. Childhood career goal: First I wanted to be an 'All Saint' then I wanted to be 'Roisin Murphy' from Moloko Perfect Sunday: No hangover, cool pub with chilled beats, good company and cooked meat in any form. Writing process: I don't really have a set rule I am always writing lyrics and working on ideas so I have them ready to make a melody. Sometimes just hearing a beat or piece of music can inspire words and melody. I believe that editing is a vital skill to learn as less is often more. Happening next: I am planning live gigs and sessions all over UK starting with my EP launch at Birthdays. After a long stint in studio I am massively excited to get out there with my band! I will be releasing again at the end of year and continue in the studio though. She will be playing at Birthdays in Dalston on the 17th of June - and she'll be wearing Miista shoes while performing! We're going, you should too.
