Witchcraft / Dance Music
We’re not exactly what you’d call the superstitious bunch but some awful proverbial ghosts of the past have come to hunt me on this fine Friday the 13th. I for one wouldn't necessarily mind practicing a bit of witchcraft to rid the bad spirits exorcism style but the healthier options include wearing my best shoes and dancing a lot, preferably while a guy called Powell is on the decks. Whatever the date, it is Friday after all. The London based dude Powell started the label Diagonal with his friend and a little over two years ago, released his EP Body Music. You get people like SBTRKT and Stingray that never perform without their respective masks, and there's the elusive Burial. To be fair, you'd never catch guys like Jackmaster and Ben UFO throwing their hands in the air like they just didn't care during their sets. That's more Steve Aoki or Avicii. Nevertheless, it's still not very underground. When Powell's Body Music was released, that felt like a real underground thing. The music was exciting, it was gritty, fast and energetic. It was entirely new and fresh, but mixed with the influences of old. There was no face attached to any of it, it was just excitement at its purest simplest form. This was the song in question: The nods to post punk, industrial sounds and experimental noise are something that set it apart from others. I love techno, a lot, but amongst reverb after reverb and chopped vocals, his sooty sound stands out. It's also still very much underground. He has no real interest in putting out a massive body of work and while there's the occasional DJ gig, it's hardly grown into some techno superstardom. I guess there's something humble about it that I really like. The music, especially he mixtape below, is also exactly the right mix of dark and energetic. Really, that's the perfect Friday evening balance. Dance away all the bad and charge yourself with the good. This is cue for me to stop writing as there's the imminent threat of starting to sound like an actual wannabe witch doctor. Instead here's the mixtape for you guys to enjoy as you get ready for that Friday night!
