The Uneasy Watching
It's been a while since we shared our favourite music videos. So, to do so we've listed seven that we've really liked. It's not deliberate but a common denominator is that they've all made us feel a little uneasy. BANKS - BEGGIN FOR THREAD She may have edges that scratch and sometimes lack have a filter, but Banks pulls you in regardless. Her voice seduces, but it is honest and unfiltered. The video with its quick shots of naked skin, tightened muscles and modern dance is appropriately sensual. Smoke, dust, light - this is nothing Banks needs as her voice and music have enough depth but when something is executed as beautifully as this, we can't do much but marvel. ÁSGEIR - KING AND CROSS When was the last time anyone from Iceland came out with a song that wasn't good? Ásgeir isn't going to change the near perfect track record. The video is just as good. An after hours factory, filled with ballerinas and a dancing SWAT team - it juxtaposes darkness with light. A bit uncomfortable but soothing all the same. Daft Punk is so yesterday. LIARS - PRO ANTI ANTI Liars released their new album Mess in March and it's been brilliant. This video in how captivating it is represents it perfectly. Maybe I've watched too much telly but there's always something eerie about sculptures and making one. Seeing them melt... Well, double the creep vibe. Be as it may, a bomb could've gone off while this video was playing and I wouldn't have noticed. STRAND OF OAKES - SAME EMOTIONS Being attractive obviously has its perks but don't be a dick about it, or this is what the video might suggest. The scruffy looking but tender voiced Timothy Showalter transforms into none other than a vampire, running a group of man eaters. Pretty literally, I guess. A lot of public displays of nudity ensues so you might want to skip this video if you're at work maybe? Showalter has seen plenty of awful things happen to him but he's taken the turmoil to power his creativity. The results are excellent. LOWELL - THE BELLS Horror film characters carry on with Lowell. Fit monster-like breakdancers, cheerleaders, a marching band and roller skaters on an American football ground all gets a somewhat schizophrenic edit in this video. It's bizarre to say the least. The Guardian compares her to a creepier version of Scandi pop stars and a bit creepy this Canadian singer is. But, that's exactly what we like. Lowell's debut album We Loved Her Dearly is due out September 16. TEEN - TIED UP TIED DOWN Brooklyn alt band TEEN took three teenage girls and put them together with three teenage boys. Whatever will happen? Well, lots of making out and smoking of course, but what I don't recall from my own teenage years is bleeding faces and boxing. The times, they are a-changin! Perhaps it's a metaphor for something, but whatever it is, it makes an interesting (if disturbing) watch. FOXYGEN - HOW CAN YOU REALLY For sure less sinister than the previous videos, it still has a man in a crop top. But, despite voicing some dislike for them in the past, I'm willing to eat my words if the guy sways around like Mick Jagger. Wearing a lot of vintage can go either of two ways - you'll either end up as the obnoxious person who lectures everyone on how great the world was in the 50s (yeah, we're sure it was) or you'll look really incredibly cool. The foxy boys of Foxygen are looking really bloody cool.
