Now they have a new plaything: the gourmet doughnut.
Once regarded as a cheap "dirty food" the current doughnut renaissance reinvents the sweet treat as a freshly baked blank canvas. With a no-holds barred approach to experimentation with fashionable flavours and filling combinations, we love this nostalgic indulgence. Our introduction to the craze came by stumbling across the Crosstown pop-up at Netil Market. Overwhelmed by the sophisticated cocktail of flavours on the menu, we eventually settled for a Sea Salt Caramel and Banana Cream Doughnut, tempted by the generous portion of banana cream bursting from the seams. Their signature sourdough base is chosen for less fat absorption and maximum flavour explosion.
Serious eye candy, we discovered these handmade dough balls at KERB
street food market. They offer a playful spin on the theme; coating, dipping and sprinkling on demand. Coat in vanilla sugar, dip into homemade Toffee Apple sauce, then sprinkle away to your hearts content with Popping Candy and Almond Crunch.
