THE MAKEUP OF MISSY “MISDEMEANOR” ELLIOTT
MISSY ELLIOTT & DA BRAT
SOCK IT 2 ME FROM “SUPA DUPA FLY” ALBUM
ABOUT SOCK IT 2 ME
Directed by Hype Williams and inspired by the Mega Man video game series. The video takes place on a remote planet where Missy Elliott & Lil’ Kim are wearing red and white space suits while being chased by robot monsters. Da Brat comes to rescue Missy Elliott & Lil’ Kim towards the end of the video where Da Brat starts to rap her verse while wearing a black and yellow space suit. In one scene, Elliott and other dancers are in a space ship doing the dance from Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson.
My favourite makeup from this video is the silver eyelids and deep burgundy lip combo, and gold eyelids with deep burgundy lip combo. Try Illamasqua Vintage Metallix in “Galaxy” pasted over eyelids to look just like a space-babe Missy.
SHE’S A B**CH FROM “DA REAL WORLD” ALBUM
ABOUT SHE’S A B**CH
Directed by Hype Williams making extensive use of special effects, costume and set-design. Highlights include Elliott and her dancers raising from out of the water on an oversized hydraulic “M”, as well as a set made from Electro Luminescent lighting with experts were flown from Germany to construct the set. Costuming for the video was unconventional, with Missy Elliott and her dancers dressed in rubber suits with bald heads. The production cost of the video was over $2 million, making it one of the most expensive music videos of all time.
For this video, Missy Elliott was airbrushed with jet black, a bald cap was applied to her head, and she was adorned with crystals, you don’t get much more dedication to a cause than that. I recommend as a good crystal supplier, try Swarovski no-hot-fix crystals in a pack of 100, I think Missy would approve of the Midnight-Mix-With-Stars multipack.
THE RAIN (SUPA DUPA FLY)
ABOUT THE RAIN (SUPA DUPA FLY)
This music video was the first to be directed by Hype Williams. The most iconic part of the video is the inflated trash bag that Missy wears during a fisheye lens shot. Timbaland, Tamara Johnson-George of SWV, YoY o, Lil’ Kim, Total, 702, Da Brat, Lil’ Cease and Puff Daddy all make cameos in the video. The video was nominated for Best Rap Video at the 1997 VMA’s.
Black glossy lips. Perfect. I love this tar-like lip gloss – It’s called “Cross Gloss” in shade Raven and the top of the bottle is shaped like a crucifix. Purr.
Released September 9th 2002 for Elliott’s fourth studio album “Under Construction”
ABOUT WORK IT
The music video to “Work It” was directed by Dave Meyers. Timbaland, Eve and Tweet make cameos in the video, with Aaliyah and Lisa Left Eye Lopes commemorated with their images airbrushed on a car’s bonnet in the video. In shooting the video, director Myers shot the opening scene with live bumblebees with only one crew member getting stung. Myers also forgot to replace a glass of wine with a glass of water when filming a restaurant scene, which led to Elliott being heavily drunk after production.
Missy sports several looks in this video that I really love, the first is with black wasps crawling over her face with a short deliberately dilapidated afro, the second is a high brushed-out pony tail with wide head band and the third is another short black neat rounded afro with gold “M” hoops. Silly Jokes is a great supplier of all things fake, so unlike a crew member on the set of the “Work It” video you don’t actually have to go anywhere near real creepy crawlies and get stung, you can recreate that first scene of Missy’s vid and play around with insect visuals from the comfort and safety of your living room.
WTF (WHERE THEY FROM)
Released November 12th 2015
ABOUT WTF (WHERE THEY FROM)
Directed by Dave Meyers. Opening scene is Downtown Los Angeles, a mirror-clad Elliott down an abandoned alleyway, and then a face morph between a dotty pop-art inspired makeup and a blue lip stripe makeup. My favourite part is a segment with Pharrell and Missy Elliott dancing as marionettes rapping their verses.
For the ultimate blue lipstick try Lime Crime’s Unicorn Lipstick in shade “Crybaby”; it’s Vegan and the most brilliant shiny blue Missy Elliot-esque colour
