We asked our friend Dimmi Taburets, Ukrainian artist and photographer, to show us what our New Arrivals reminded him of. Turns out our square Marige Boot doubles as ruler.

We caught up with Dimmi this week to find out a little more about how his brain works and how he has created such a distinct digital visual style. Going all the way back to a young Dimmi dressing up in his Grandma’s clothes and listening to Eminem. We hope you enjoy!

What does this remind you of?

Where do you find inspiration?

Inspiration is like waves. Sometimes I can have nothing in my head. But then a big wave comes, you just have to surf it. Take your board and surf this wave of what your mind has produced.

Is there a moment you remember as a child when you created your first art?

As a child I would spend the Summer with my Grandma, I liked to put my Grandma’s clothes on and pretend I am a Grandma. In these clothes we would play cards. She always told me you should be an actor.

Is that what young Dimmi wanted to be when he grew up?

I would love to be an actor, but it was just a thought.

When did you start creating the work you do now?

Before quarantine I dedicated myself more to painting. During covid I felt I had to do something creative from home. I didn't have access to buy canvas and paint so I decided to create more digital work and photography.

First CD?

It was an Eminem album, I remember at the time it was cool, I downloaded all the songs to my MP3. I was around 10.

What is your idea process?

I like to do sketches. I think in pictures. I see the final result in my head. I like to represent it on paper.

How do you want people to feel when they look at your work?

I don’t think about what people think of my art. First of all, I want to feel proud of what I make. If I feel proud I feel people will like it. Sometimes I can do bad stuff too. I feel it in likes and comments, I know if it’s bad!

Usually a lot of people laugh at my art. But sometimes I don’t understand why they are laughing. I say: ‘It’s not funny, it’s cool’. Different people see my art totally differently. I like that it’s different, there is no one way of perception.

Dream person you would like to shoot?

I have this idea to shoot the Kardashian family. To shoot it in a totally different manner, totally weird.

Favourite work?

Every work is so different for me. For brands it's totally different, like what I did for Miista. Every experience is so great. What I like about my work is that I don’t concentrate on a specific style or specific presentation. I am trying to find different ways and trying to surprise myself and people more and more.

3 things you can't live without?

My phone. My specific sunglasses.

I think love, anyone you can love, love is important. Sincerity. Jokes.

What’s next for Dimmi?

I’m just trying to call Kim Kardashian for a shoot. No, I’m joking.

What I’m trying to do is just try to live. As you know the war is still on. Concentrate more on life. And try to relax.
