“CAN I VISIT YOUR FACTORY?”

REPORTING FROM THE FACTORY FLOOR

Nassia and Ella here. 👋 Live from Miista's Factory.

We realised we are not the only ones commenting on Miista's instagram asking “Can I visit your factory”, every time they post a craft video. And so we decided to take actions into our own hands.

We became undercover Mystery Reporters who snuck in and managed to walk inside the MIISTA Factory.

We've wanted to report live whether they really do have a Short Supply Chain, and if everything is crafted by hand? We found out more than we even expected...

ARE YOU CURIOUS?

They have spoken a lot over the last year about what the ownership of the supply chain in this industry means, and how it’s a choice to combat this crazy cycle of constant consumption we find ourselves in. Something we all agreed on is that we hate buzzwords, and that as a fashion brand, nobody should claim to be ‘sustainable’.

We thought about how we could best leak to you in real-time the process of their internal operations, and the steps they follow to craft each of the pieces of their collections.

So, when we saw their Artisans packing up each pair of Miista's, we jumped at the opportunity to sneak a pair of Miista 3D glasses into the box. Did you spot them already? You're going to need them for the real 3D experience.

OUR BIGGEST LEARNING?

We snooped first around their materials stockroom. Shelves full of archive and excess materials, accumulated over the last 10 years, got emptied. We manually counted and there are 47 new combinations of their best sellers, exclusively for this sale.

At Miista's factory the word WASTE is not the reality. They don't see leftovers as a problem, but a solution to a new construction. The manufacturing cycle is circular.

You can see here some of the new styles we discovered.

The manager in the stockroom shared some care tips too:

  • Did you know that all leathers are not waterproof? We didn't, and we learnt this the hard way when Ella's water spilt over in the stock room. So please do take note—you should keep your Miista's away from water.

  • Each leather is unique. You might notice subtle differences between products or small variations in the grain. These are what make each pair uniquely beautiful; they are not flaws.

  • As you make use of your shoes, they may naturally wear over time, wrinkles may appear on the instep through the natural movement of your steps or they may pick up scratches or marks. This is all part of the leather's charm and every pair becoming unique to their wearer.

No hidden secrets here, and we have more to uncover. You can check back here daily for more footage to come while we are still reporting live...

NEXT WE INVESTIGATED THE FACTORY PRODUCTION. DO YOU KNOW WHAT A LAST IS?

Have you ever thought about how a 2D sketch becomes a 3D reality?

Each construction of shoe has it’s very own last—don't worry we didn’t know what this was either.

We learned a last is a foot-shaped block that shoemakers use to create and ensure the structure, shape, and aesthetic of a shoe throughout production.

We filmed some being used below by the Miista artisans during the making process of a shoe. Thoughts?

SIZE MATTERS...IN SHOE MAKING THAT IS.

So if you're following us correctly, the shoe last ensures the foot is correctly shaped, but this lead us to question how their boot uppers on the calves get quality controlled to the correct sizing?

"Look over here Nassia, I've just spotted some metal shaped legs"

...our footage is still uploading. Check back in with us in a few hours for our next live updates.

But before we go, a word of advice from the quality control room; remove the plastic sole protector from your Miista's before wearing them outside.
